I began my academic work late with a part-time Master’s degree at Birkbeck, while/after working for several years in the film and television industry and completed my PhD as a mature student, funded by the AHRC. I have at other times worked in the wine industry, as a football coach and as a translator. My first degree was in Philosophy and was completed in the twentieth century.
